About Me

Dear Reader,

Thanks for checking out my website.

I am the author of God’s Instant and Dark Canyons. Both books take place in the rural Pacific Northwest, and both have reached as high as No. 12 on Amazon’s list of best-selling young adult western books for Kindle.

I first began to think of myself as a writer when I won an essay contest way back in the seventh grade. After a less  than stellar academic career at Western Washington University (where I “majored” in track and field), I left school without a degree and took a job covering high school sports for the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon, Washington.

I spent the next 16 years covering everything from little league baseball to religion to local government for newspapers in Mount Vernon, Pullman, Burien, Puyallup, Yakima, and Kennewick, Washington. I also managed to squeeze in a little freelance work for Runner’s World Magazine and Northwest Runner.

In 1986 I began a 26-year teaching and coaching career. My first stop was Eisenhower High School in Yakima. Then two years at Pomeroy High School in the remote southeastern corner of Washington (My second novel, Dark Canyons is set in Pomeroy and the nearby Blue Mountains). Next, I moved on to Richland High School where I spent the next 21 years teaching English and History. During that time, I also coached track and field and cross country at both Richland High and at nearby Kiona-Benton High School.

My wife, Tina, and I still live on the same 25 dusty acers nestled between Rattlesnake Ridge and the Horse Heaven Hills where our two adult daughters grew up.

I have two more books nearly ready for publication. Always a Runner should be out later this spring and a sequel, Jonah’s Story will appear this summer.
